Cyprus President’s EU Trip to Bolster Regional Ties

President Christodoulides Embarks on a Pivotal European Tour

In a significant move that underscores Cyprus’ active role within the European Union, President Nikos Christodoulides is set to embark on a diplomatic tour to Belgium this Wednesday. His agenda includes a visit to the prestigious College of Europe in Bruges, participation in the consequential European Council summit in Brussels, and a series of strategic meetings with high-ranking officials.

According to Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, President Christodoulides’ visit will not only encompass formal engagements but also a noteworthy working lunch with the UN Secretary General, attended by leaders from across the EU. While the possibility of a one-on-one meeting with the UN Secretary General remains tentative, it is an opportunity the Cypriot delegation is prepared to seize if it presents itself.

The President’s visit to Bruges comes as a response to an invitation from the Society of Cypriot Students at the College of Europe. There, he will address the students during a week dedicated to Cypriot culture and contributions, marking an unprecedented visit by a sitting Cypriot President to this institution. His schedule includes a private meeting with the College’s rector, Federica Mogherini, former Vice President of the European Commission, and interactions with members of the European Diplomatic Academy.

Further engagements include a meeting with Margaritis Schinas, Vice President of the European Commission, before proceeding to Brussels for the European Council summit. The agenda in Brussels is dense, with President Christodoulides participating in European People’s Party activities and discussing pressing global issues such as the Middle East tensions and the ongoing situation in Ukraine during a luncheon with the UN Secretary General.

The tour also commemorates a milestone in European integration—the 30th anniversary of the European Economic Area—where President Christodoulides will join EU member state leaders and representatives from Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. A Eurozone summit is also on the docket before his return to Cyprus on Friday evening.

Accompanying President Christodoulides on this diplomatic mission are Konstantinos Letymbiotis and Victor Papadopoulos, director of the president’s press office. Their participation underscores the importance of these meetings in shaping Cyprus’ role and influence within the broader European context.
