Weather Conditions Impact Health and Daily Life
The serene blue skies across the region are currently blemished by an unwelcome visitor from the Sahara. A high pressure system has ushered in warm and dry currents, bringing with it a haze of Saharan dust filled with hazardous particles. This atmospheric cocktail has pushed particulate matter levels beyond the safety threshold, posing a risk to vulnerable groups.
As of the 0800 measurements, the air quality index has raised concerns, with Nicosia recording particulate matter (PM10) levels at 70 micrograms, surpassing the safety level of 50 micrograms. Nearby cities are also affected, with Paralimni at 51, Larnaca at 57, and Limassol at 52. The heightened presence of PM10 dust particles could spell trouble for individuals suffering from respiratory conditions, heart diseases, asthma, hypertension, and could particularly affect children.
Despite the health advisories, the dust shows no sign of abating until Wednesday. Meanwhile, temperatures continue to soar above the seasonal average, reaching 31 degrees Celsius inland, with coastal areas slightly cooler at 27 degrees, and mountain regions enjoying a mild 21 degrees. The winds remain gentle, blowing from the southwesterly to northwesterly direction at force three, over tranquil seas.
The evenings promise clearer skies initially, but high clouds are expected to drift in sporadically as the night progresses. The light breezes will shift from northwesterly to northeasterly, also at force three, ensuring calm seas. As night falls, temperatures are predicted to descend to a comfortable 14 degrees Celsius inland, with eastern and southeastern coastal regions experiencing a warmer 17 degrees, other coastal areas at 15 degrees, and the mountains cooling down to 12 degrees.
The forecast for the upcoming three days remains optimistic for sun-seekers as conditions are expected to be fine and warm. The mercury is set to linger in the low 30s, maintaining a streak of weather that is significantly warmer than what is typically expected for this time of year.
