Fire in Limassol Extinguished After Five Hours
In a recent incident, a 33-year-old individual has confessed to igniting a fire in an attempt to clear out dry weeds. This act of arson took place on the outskirts of Ayios Therapon village, situated in the mountainous region of Limassol. The event unfolded early yesterday afternoon and was witnessed by locals who observed the man as he set the fire.
The response from the fire service was prompt, with a call received around three o’clock leading to the immediate dispatch of four vehicles to the Mylos area. The operation was bolstered by two additional vehicles, one from the forestry department and another provided by the community council. Despite the challenging conditions presented by the rough terrain, the coordinated efforts of the crews were successful in containing and extinguishing the fire within five hours.
The blaze resulted in the destruction of five hectares, consuming not only dry weeds but also shrubbery and carob trees in its path. Fortunately, due to the swift action of the fire service and assisting teams, the fire was prevented from spreading further into surrounding areas.
Following the incident, the individual responsible for starting the fire has been taken into custody. The Limassol CID is currently conducting an investigation into the case. It is important to note that lighting a fire in forested or rural areas without proper authorization is considered a criminal offense. Those found guilty of such actions may face imprisonment or substantial fines, depending on the severity of their offense.
