In a recent announcement, the Cyprus Transport Ministry has introduced a new level of flexibility for vehicle owners regarding the renewal of their 2024 circulation tax. Starting now, motorists have the option to renew their road tax for periods of 3, 6, 9, or a full 12 months, catering to the diverse needs of vehicle owners across the island.
However, the Ministry has set a strict deadline for renewals. Vehicle owners who fail to renew their road tax by March 10 will be subject to a €10 surcharge in addition to a 10% penalty on the amount due. This measure is part of the government’s efforts to ensure timely compliance with road tax obligations.
To renew the road tax, two critical documents are required: a paid-up motor insurance policy and a valid road worthiness certificate, commonly known as the MOT. These prerequisites are in place to maintain safety standards and financial responsibility on Cyprus roads.
In an effort to streamline the renewal process, as of June 2023, all motor circulation licenses will be renewed exclusively through the Road Transport Department’s website. The previous option of using the JCC portal has been discontinued. This transition to a single online platform is expected to simplify the procedure for motorists.
Evangelos Panteli, an official from the Department, shared insights on the shift towards online renewals. According to Panteli, an impressive 95% of circulation licenses were renewed online last year. Furthermore, a significant majority of 85% chose to renew for the entire year up until December.
In a nod to sustainability and environmental consciousness, Panteli highlighted that all electric vehicles (EVs) are exempt from any road tax. While this exemption encourages the adoption of cleaner transportation options, it remains unclear how the growing presence of EVs in the Cyprus market will impact the Department’s revenues in the coming year.
The Cyprus Transport Ministry’s latest move reflects its commitment to providing convenience to motorists while also promoting responsible vehicle ownership and environmental stewardship. Vehicle owners are encouraged to take advantage of the flexible renewal options and adhere to the March 10 deadline to avoid additional charges.
