Investigative Panel to Probe Allegations Raised in “Mafia State”

The much-anticipated investigation into the corruption allegations against former President Nicos Anastasiades, as raised in the controversial book “Mafia State”, is set to commence. The book’s author, Makarios Drousiotis, an investigative journalist and former aide to Anastasiades, has been a vocal critic of the political elite in Cyprus, accusing them of endemic corruption.

The Independent Authority against Corruption has established a special investigative panel to delve into the claims presented by Drousiotis. The panel is led by Gabrielle Louise MacIntyre, an Australian expert renowned for her investigative prowess. MacIntyre’s team includes seasoned Greek Cypriot investigators Charilaos Chrysanthou, Oreste Niketa, and Andreas Efthymiou, who have been preparing for the inquiry since early March.

Their investigation will not only cover the broad allegations but also specific instances of questionable legislative changes and financial transactions linked to Anastasiades. One of the most contentious issues involves Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev and his dealings with the former president.

Another significant aspect of the investigation will focus on Drousiotis’s allegations concerning surveillance and misconduct within the Cyprus Police. The author claims his communications were compromised through sophisticated malware, suggesting potential breaches in police integrity.
