CTP Leader Erhurman: Turkish Cypriots’ Future Anchored in EU Values

Aligning with European Values: A Path Forward for Turkish Cypriots

In a recent address to the ‘parliament’, Tufan Erhurman, leader of the opposition party CTP, emphasized the importance of European values for the future of Turkish Cypriots. Erhurman criticized the perceived benefits of international non-recognition, highlighting the issues it has exacerbated, such as smuggling and human trafficking, particularly in relation to the “fake diploma scandal” affecting the north’s higher education sector.

Erhurman pointed out that measures against human trafficking, which are standard in other countries, are hindered in the north due to its unique status. He starkly noted, “This money is not clean money. Unclean money drives out clean money. An unclean person also drives out a clean person.” The leader underscored past efforts to align with international law, citing the Immovable Property Commission as a positive step towards this goal.

However, he expressed disappointment at the lack of further action by current leaders, accusing them of indifference towards European Union harmonisation laws and committees. “Those who claim to rule the country right now do not care. They are taking us out of the international community,” Erhurman declared.

He stressed that adherence to international standards is crucial for the Turkish Cypriot people’s future and for addressing systemic issues that have led to inequality and social injustice. Erhurman lamented that the north’s detachment from the international community has resulted in a regression, leaving it “in a worse condition than even 10 years ago.”

Turning to the Cyprus problem, Erhurman criticized the Greek Cypriot leadership for the stalemate post-2004 and called out the current Turkish Cypriot leadership for setting negotiation criteria that are incomprehensible to both the international community and their own people. He urged the ‘parliament’ to take action, warning that the status quo is “alienating the Turkish Cypriot people from the international community.”

Erhurman concluded with a stark reminder of the unsustainable nature of isolation, asserting that Turkish Cypriots cannot thrive cut off from global engagement. “It is not possible to make the Turkish Cypriot people’s existence sustainable in isolation from the international community,” he affirmed.
