European Parliament President’s Productive Visit to Cyprus
The president of the European parliament, Roberta Metsola, has embarked on a significant two-day working visit to Cyprus, highlighting the island’s strategic role in the region and its relationship with the European Union. Her itinerary is packed with meetings that underscore the EU’s commitment to engaging with member states on a range of critical issues.
Upon her arrival on Monday, Metsola was warmly welcomed by President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace, setting the tone for a visit marked by high-level discussions and exchanges. The following day, Metsola’s schedule included an early morning session with both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot youth representatives. This meeting, held at the EU House, focused on the upcoming European elections and the role of civil society, reflecting the EP president’s dedication to fostering dialogue across diverse communities.
Continuing her engagements, Metsola also met with House president Annita Demetriou, further solidifying the strong ties between the legislative bodies of Cyprus and the European Union. One of the key moments of her visit will be at 11.00am when she tours the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre. There, President Christodoulides is set to brief her on the Amalthea initiative, a project that has garnered international recognition and support for its contributions to regional safety and humanitarian efforts.
Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized that Metsola’s visit is a clear indication of the EU’s ongoing interest in Cyprus’ initiatives. The working visit not only reaffirms the Republic of Cyprus’s standing within the EU but also showcases its achievements on an international stage, further enhancing cooperation and solidarity among member states.
