Delays in Larnaca Port Expansion Raise Concerns
Amidst the bustling economic activity of Cyprus, a shadow of uncertainty looms over the much-anticipated expansion and restoration of Larnaca port. The project, a significant €1.2 billion undertaking, was awarded to Kition Ocean Holdings two years prior. Despite the passage of time, not a single work has commenced, stirring serious concerns among government officials and local representatives.
The initial timeline slated for the project’s commencement was April 2023. Nevertheless, an extension pushed this date to March-April 2024, a milestone that has also slipped by unmet. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades has now cast doubt on the company’s ability to adhere to the revised start date of June 2024, voicing his reservations about the project’s progress.
In response to inquiries, a spokesperson for Kition Ocean Holdings referred to contractual stipulations that prevent the company from publicly discussing the project’s status. The spokesperson pointed out that only the government is authorized to release updates or statements regarding the ongoing developments.
Vafeades, however, has not shied away from expressing his strong concerns. He emphasized the importance of witnessing tangible progress and cautioned that complacency is not an option until actual works are visible on site. The minister has also indicated that should Kition Ocean Holdings fail to meet its contractual obligations, the government will take appropriate action.
Regular consultations between the government and the consortium members have been taking place, with Vafeades himself having met with them recently to stress the urgency of initiating the major projects. Despite these efforts, Larnaca Disy MP Prodromos Alambritis noted that aside from a few minor undertakings, no significant works have been observed since the company assumed control of the project.
Larnaca Akel MP Andreas Pasiourtides conveyed to Cyprus Mail that there is an expectation for work to begin around May or June. He assured that they are vigilantly monitoring the situation and are prepared to demand a comprehensive report and answers should further issues arise.
The project, which received approval from former President Nicos Anastasiades in April 2022, remains a topic of scrutiny as stakeholders eagerly await the commencement of works that promise to enhance Larnaca’s port facilities and contribute to the region’s economic growth.
