A Blueprint for Cyprus’ Water Future
In a significant move to secure the future of water resources in Cyprus, the Ministerial Council has given the green light to the National Investment Plan for Water Projects. This strategic initiative is set to address the pressing needs of water supply and irrigation throughout the island nation, informed by the latest data and designed to ensure a sustainable water future.
The announcement came from Maria Panayiotou, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, who expressed that the approval followed a proposal from her office. The plan, a first of its kind and developed by the Department of Water Development (DWD), places her ministry at the helm of coordinating and overseeing its execution.
At the core of the National Investment Plan are several key objectives:
- Project Prioritization: Ensuring that projects are selected based on thoroughly documented needs.
- Resource Allocation: More efficient use of water resources underpinned by sound fiscal management.
- Nationwide Coverage: Guaranteeing that the distribution of water resources meets the needs across Cyprus.
- Wastewater Systems: Enhancing the rollout of wastewater system construction programs.
The plan earmarks a budget of €1.17 billion for water projects managed by the DWD and other sewage entities. Currently, 33 water infrastructure projects are underway, focusing on water supply, sewage treatment in line with European Directive mandates, reclaimed water, and irrigation. These first-priority projects carry an estimated cost of €721.8 million and are expected to be completed between 2024 and 2029.
An additional 60 projects are under assessment, with an estimated budget of €445.5 million. These projects are slated for initiation in 2025 and aim for completion by 2030.
“Through the National Investment Plan for Water Projects, we are implementing relevant objectives of the governance programme for water sufficiency and the utilisation of reclaimed water,” Minister Panayiotou stated. She underscored the plan’s role in laying down a solid foundation for a long-term government water policy that enhances management of both water and wastewater systems in Cyprus.
