Legal Service Prepared to Act on Anti-Corruption Authority’s Findings
Attorney-general George Savvides has assured the public that the Legal Service is ready to take appropriate action should the ongoing Anti-Corruption Authority’s investigation into former president Nicos Anastasiades yield incriminating evidence. This statement came amidst concerns over potential conflicts of interest due to Savvides’ long-standing friendship with Anastasiades.
Speaking at a University of Cyprus law event, Savvides addressed the sensitive nature of the investigation, which stems from allegations made in the book ‘Mafia State’ by Makarios Drousiotis. “If and when any circumstances arise that the Legal Service will be called upon to make decisions, you know very well that there are ways to resolve any relationships, or conflicts,” he stated, emphasizing respect for the authority’s process.
The attorney-general has been under scrutiny for his four-decade friendship with the former president. When questioned about the possibility of recusal, Savvides deftly avoided a direct answer, instead focusing on the integrity of the investigation process.
Drousiotis had recently testified before the authority regarding his claims against Anastasiades. Additionally, Savvides touched upon another high-profile case involving former drug squad chief Michalis Katsounotos. The authority is reviewing the attorney-general’s office’s decision not to press charges against Katsounotos, who was accused by former prisons director Anna Aristotelous of espionage and attempted framing. Despite Aristotelous’ lawyers’ attempts to initiate private criminal prosecutions, they were not sanctioned by the attorney-general’s office.
Savvides confirmed ongoing communication with the Anti-Corruption Authority concerning the Katsounotos case but refrained from further comment. He assured that any developments or decisions would be communicated to the public transparently. The community awaits as the Legal Service navigates these complex legal waters, ensuring justice and upholding the rule of law.
