Tragic School Shooting in Finland Linked to Bullying
In a somber revelation, Finnish authorities have shed light on the circumstances leading up to a tragic school shooting that left one student dead and two others severely injured. The 12-year-old perpetrator, who carried out the attack at Viertola school near Helsinki, was himself a victim of bullying, according to police statements released on Wednesday.
The young boy, who had only transferred to the school at the start of the year, brought a revolver belonging to a relative to the school on Tuesday. In a harrowing incident, he shot three fellow sixth-graders and threatened several others before being apprehended. The nation mourned as flags were lowered to half-mast, and the community grappled with the aftermath of the violence that had unfolded.
Lead investigator Detective Chief Inspector Marko Sarkka, speaking to Reuters, disclosed that bullying was a significant factor behind the tragedy. “We just found out today that there was this bullying behind the tragedy,” Sarkka stated, highlighting a disturbing trend of rising bullying incidents in Finnish schools. A study by the public health institute THL in 2023 indicated an increase in reported bullying cases, with 8.6% of pupils around 12 years old experiencing it at least once a week.
The legality of the firearm’s possession has also come under scrutiny. The revolver used in the attack was legally owned by a relative of the young shooter. However, details on how the boy obtained the weapon remain unclear. “This matter is being investigated by the police as a separate firearms offence,” stated investigators, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the breach of firearm security.
