Crackdown on Illegal Employment and Residence in Paphos
In a recent operation, Paphos police clamped down on illegal employment and residence, leading to the arrests of two individuals under suspicion of violating immigration laws.
The first incident unfolded late in the evening when immigration officers acted on a tip-off and apprehended a 22-year-old Pakistani man. Investigations revealed that he had been living in Cyprus without proper authorization since March 24, 2023. Following his arrest, he was escorted to the Paphos Police Station where he is currently being detained.
The second arrest occurred shortly thereafter, targeting a 44-year-old woman of African descent. She was discovered working unlawfully at a local bakery. Similar to the first case, it was determined that she had been in the country without legal residence status since November 15, 2022. She too was taken into custody at the Paphos police station.
Further investigations led to the involvement of their employers in the matter. A 40-year-old Romanian national and a 35-year-old Cypriot national were both summoned to the police station in connection with the illegal employment of these individuals.
The actions taken by the Paphos police highlight the ongoing efforts to address issues related to unauthorized employment and residence, ensuring compliance with the Republic’s immigration policies. These cases serve as a reminder of the legal responsibilities employers have when hiring staff and the importance of adhering to immigration regulations.
