Crackdown on Migrant Smuggling Networks Intensifies
In response to the recent spike in migrant arrivals, Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis has emphasized the urgent need for a concerted effort to dismantle migrant smuggling networks. This statement came as over a dozen boats from Lebanon reached Cyprus, challenging the nation’s immigration policies and resources.
The Pournara reception centre is facing the possibility of overcrowding, with reports suggesting that army camps might be repurposed to house the increasing number of migrants. Hartsiotis, during a press conference reviewing the ministry’s performance under the new government, pointed out that Lebanon is a known hub for smuggler operations. “It is well known that the source of the problem, including at the level of smugglers, is in Lebanon,” he stated.
While acknowledging some progress in collaboration with Lebanese authorities to address the issue, Hartsiotis highlighted the bolstering of Cyprus’ police force to combat smuggling activities more effectively. Arrests are now a daily occurrence as the police work tirelessly to disrupt these illicit networks.
The minister made it clear that smuggling is a complex regional problem, with interconnected rings operating not only in Lebanon but also in Syria and other areas. “The issue of smugglers does not only concern Cyprus; there are circles that operate in a wider geographical area throughout the region,” he explained.
Despite the challenges in apprehending smugglers, including legal hurdles that Hartsiotis chose not to detail, Cypriot authorities are said to possess “very specific evidence.” This intelligence is being shared with Lebanese officials and at the European Union level to facilitate a broader strategy against human trafficking.
Earlier discussions in parliament raised concerns that those apprehended for smuggling might not be the ringleaders but rather boat drivers coerced into taking on higher risks for reduced fees. This underscores the complexity of dismantling smuggling networks and the need for a multifaceted approach to bring about effective change.
