Shedding Light on Varosha’s Plight Through Documentary Filmmaking
In an effort to amplify the narrative of Varosha, once a bustling Mediterranean resort, a new documentary titled Varosha, the European Fenced-off City has been making waves. The film serves as a poignant reminder of the city’s transformation into a desolate military zone, inaccessible to Europeans on their own continent. It marks half a century since Varosha’s 20,000 inhabitants were displaced in 1974, leaving behind a ghost town wrapped in barbed wire.
The documentary is not just a historical recount; it is an active call to action. By interviewing local figures and presenting their stories, the film aims to raise global awareness about the ongoing situation in Varosha. The production, led by Tonis Toumazis in collaboration with the “Varosha Initiative” team and Green Olive Productions, seeks to inform the international community and influence policy makers.
With its premiere successfully aired by CyBC in August 2023, the documentary team is now engaging with international broadcasters to further disseminate the film. As part of a global screening campaign, MEP Loucas Fourlas will host a special viewing in Brussels on April 8, 2024. This event is expected to contribute significantly to the documentary’s international exposure and impact.
For those interested in learning more about Varosha’s history and current state, or for those who wish to support the cause, the documentary can be discovered and shared through their official website at www.varoshaeu.com. The creators hope that through increased visibility, Varosha’s story will not only be told but will also inspire action towards resolving this long-standing issue.
