Emerging Artists to Weave New Creative Threads in Larnaca
In a bold move to intertwine the past with the present, Larnaca 2030 has unveiled “Needle,” a groundbreaking artistic residency programme. Six emerging artists have been selected to embark on a six-week journey of creation, drawing inspiration from Larnaca’s rich cultural tapestry. The initiative kicked off at the organization’s headquarters, setting the stage for an exploration of the city’s heritage through fresh artistic lenses.
From the echoes of antiquity to contemporary vibrancy, Larnaca offers a myriad of stimuli for artistic minds. The selected artists will delve into the city’s soul, engaging with its people, historic architecture, bustling streets, and the Mediterranean’s mesmerizing sea and sunlight. Their interpretations will culminate in an all-day art festival on May 12, 2024, at Zouhouri Square, showcasing their newly minted works.
The brainchild of George Antoniou, a visionary social innovation project manager, “Needle” clinched the national award in the 2023 “Be.CULTOUR” competition. This Horizon Europe programme champions sustainable cultural tourism innovations. Antoniou’s concept took shape through the “Art in Public Space” working group and with the input of cultural consultant Maria Kaimaklioti. The Phivos Stavrides Foundation and Larnaca 2030 are now propelling the project forward.
Antoniou emphasizes that “The Needle” is more than an artistic endeavor; it’s a societal quest to reaffirm Cyprus’s cultural identity. The residency promises a nurturing environment for young artists, offering mentorship and exposure. They will receive guidance from the Fivos Stavrides Foundation and collaborate with established artists to create performances and interactive installations.
Complementing the creative process, “Needle & Thread Talks” will facilitate engaging discussions between artists and the public. The event in May is set to be a vibrant celebration of art, transforming Zouhouri Square into a dynamic canvas of creativity.
The residency boasts an eclectic mix of guest artists and advisory group members, each bringing their unique expertise to the table. Partner municipalities and sponsors such as Andreou Brothers and Ocean Basket have also thrown their support behind the initiative, alongside academic insights from UCLan Cyprus University. DeLeMa McCANN Cyprus serves as the digital and advertising partner, ensuring “Needle” leaves a lasting imprint on Larnaca’s cultural scene.
