A Unique Journey: Disabled Dogs Enjoy Rides in a Custom-Made ‘Dog Train’
In the outskirts of Ankara, Turkey, an animal lover has taken compassion to a new level by creating a ‘dog train’ to provide daily rides for disabled dogs. Buket Ozgunlu, the chairwoman of the Association of Paws Holding onto Life, was moved by her own experiences with her paralysed father to offer a similar sense of freedom to canines in need.
The innovative train consists of plastic barrels transformed into colorful wagons, hitched to an all-terrain vehicle. This inventive solution allows the dogs, many of whom are unable to walk, to enjoy the outdoors and experience a change of scenery, which Ozgunlu believes is as important for animals as it is for humans.
“This is how the idea for the train came up: my father is also paralysed and disabled. We felt the need to take him out (by car) and make him walk,” Ozgunlu explained. “Then, I said our kids (the dogs) do not see anything, they must want this too because the ones who are disabled are more traumatised, they feel a different intensity of emotions.”
The shelter, which provides a haven for 560 dogs rescued from dire circumstances on the streets, including 300 who have suffered physical ailments, is a testament to Ozgunlu’s dedication. “I can say we took all of them from the arms of death,” she stated with pride.
Ozgunlu and her team have not only painted the barrels in vibrant hues but also plan to enhance the dogs’ comfort by adding tarpaulins for shade, ensuring that their rides are as pleasant as possible. The ‘dog train’ is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a symbol of hope and care for the
The story of this unique train made from plastic barrels has touched hearts beyond Turkey’s borders, showcasing the boundless potential of human creativity and empathy when it comes to helping our four-legged friends.
