Migrant Vessel Intercepted Off Capo Greco
In a recent turn of events, maritime authorities intercepted a migrant vessel off the coast of Capo Greco. The boat, which was carrying 22 individuals seeking refuge, was spotted and halted on Friday, April 5, around midday. Among the passengers were 15 men, three women, and four unaccompanied minors, all of whom were seeking safer horizons.
Upon interception, the vessel was escorted to the Golden Coast fishing shelter located in Protaras. There, the migrants were registered by the local authorities in an orderly process. Following registration, they were transferred to the Pournara First Reception Centre in Kokkinotrimithia, a facility designed to provide initial assistance to individuals who arrive on the island under such dire circumstances.
The police took swift action against a 44-year-old man, who was arrested under the suspicion of navigating the migrant boat. His detention hearing is scheduled to take place at the Ammochostos District Court in Paralimni on Saturday. This incident adds to a series of arrivals, with this being the fifteenth migrant vessel to reach Cypriot waters since the previous Sunday.
With the total number of migrants reaching 808 in just under a week, the situation has prompted a vigilant response from the Port and Marine Police. Their ongoing investigation is heightened by radar signals that indicate the potential approach of three additional vessels towards Cyprus. The authorities remain on high alert as they continue to monitor the situation closely.
The influx of migrants is a pressing issue for Cyprus, and each interception brings to light the challenges faced by those making the perilous journey across the sea. As the island braces for possible new arrivals, the story of each individual and family continues to unfold in the backdrop of a complex global migration narrative.
