Expanding Support for Stray Dogs in Nicosia
In a compassionate move coinciding with World Stray Animals Day on April 4, a significant announcement was made that promises to bring relief to the stray dog population in Cyprus. As the number of homeless animals soars, with an estimated 200,000 strays across the island, local authorities have taken a decisive step to address the situation.
The municipalities of Nicosia, Strovolos, Aglandjia, Lakatamia, Agios Dhometios, and Engomi have come together to reveal their plan to enhance and enlarge the existing dog shelter located in Paliometocho. This initiative is not just about providing more space; it’s a testament to the community’s commitment to animal welfare.
A new site has been acquired right next to the current temporary dog shelter, which will allow for the expansion of the facilities. This move comes after an agreement was secured with the interior ministry, granting a one-year lease on the property that can be renewed in the future. The collaboration between the municipalities and the ministry is a clear indication of the importance placed on tackling the issue of stray animals.
Recognizing the urgent need for more room to accommodate and care for these animals, the authorities have also agreed to create a designated dog exercise area on state land. This will not only provide the dogs with much-needed space to roam and play but also improve their overall well-being.
In addition to expanding the shelter, there is a commitment from the municipalities to maintain and upgrade the current facilities. These enhancements are essential in ensuring that the shelter remains a safe and nurturing environment for the dogs until they find their forever homes.
The shelter, managed by Simba Animal Aid, is currently the only municipal facility in Cyprus dedicated to caring for stray dogs. With this expansion and improvement plan, the Cyprus Dog Shelter will be better equipped to handle the growing needs of stray dogs in Nicosia and beyond, reflecting a community deeply invested in animal welfare.
