Shaping the European Health Union: A Commitment to Universal Health Rights
In a recent statement, EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, reflected on the progress made in shaping the European Health Union. With the core principle of “my health, my right,” echoing the theme of this year’s World Health Day, Kyriakides highlighted the transformative journey since 2020.
The COVID-19 pandemic, as Kyriakides noted, was a crucible that tested the resilience of societies and health systems across Europe. However, it was also a catalyst for unity and strength. “The EU as a whole rose to the challenge and built on this experience to emerge stronger as a union,” she remarked, underscoring the power of solidarity and cooperation that characterized the EU’s response.
The EU Vaccine Strategy was particularly significant, ensuring equitable access to vaccines for all EU citizens. This strategy exemplified the collective commitment to safeguarding public health across member states.
Looking ahead, Kyriakides stressed the importance of fortifying health systems to be more resilient and agile. “Our Health Union makes our health systems stronger, putting patients at the centre,” she stated, pointing to proposed reforms in pharmaceutical legislation aimed at enhancing access to affordable medicines while nurturing a robust industry.
On a global scale, the EU’s dedication to health extends beyond its borders with a substantial investment of €4.4 billion through the EU’s Global Health Strategy, aiming to bolster health in partner countries until 2027.
Addressing specific health challenges, Kyriakides drew attention to Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, a comprehensive initiative backed by €4 billion in funding. “Four years on, it is already making a real difference for millions of cancer patients, families, and carers,” she asserted.
The EU’s approach to mental health was not overlooked. Kyriakides emphasized a comprehensive strategy that places mental and physical health on equal footing while striving to break the stigma associated with mental health challenges.
As World Health Day approaches, the EU’s commitment to ensuring that health remains a fundamental right is clear. The European Health Union continues to evolve, guided by the principle that every citizen’s health is not just a matter of policy but a right to be upheld and protected.
