Local Government Reform Approaches Final Phase
In a recent address to community leaders, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou conveyed that the anticipated local government reform is nearing completion. The minister engaged with mukhtars, local village chiefs, outlining the scope and potential impact of the upcoming changes.
Ioannou characterized the reforms as “long-awaited, radical, and ambitious,” expressing confidence that they will significantly enhance and modernize local authorities. He emphasized the importance of empowering these bodies, suggesting that the reforms will position them at the forefront of community development.
The minister highlighted the strategic objectives of the reform, which include enabling local communities to grow efficiently by effectively planning and executing policies. A key aspect of this strategy is leveraging European Union funds to bolster sectors such as the environment, digital transition, and agrotourism.
With a target date of July 1 set for resolving as many outstanding issues as possible, Ioannou assured that the consolidation of communities into larger local authorities is on track. He reassured stakeholders that this process is unfolding smoothly, adhering to pre-established timelines.
Concurrently, Ioannou noted that his ministry is actively pursuing the development of infrastructure in rural areas.
