Community Rallies to Restore Destroyed Barber Shop
In a display of solidarity, the Paphos community has come together to support a local business owner after a devastating fire. The incident, which occurred late Thursday evening, saw a barber shop owned by a Syrian national completely engulfed in flames. The fire brigade was prompt in their response, arriving at the scene at around 10:30 pm and successfully preventing the blaze from affecting adjacent buildings. Despite their efforts, the establishment suffered irreparable damage.
The investigation into the cause of the fire has led to the arrest of a 24-year-old man, who was remanded in custody on suspicion of arson. Assistant operations director of Paphos police, Michalis Nikolaou, initially suggested that the fire might have been set intentionally. He later clarified to the Cyprus Mail that the act was not racially motivated but stemmed from “personal differences”.
In the wake of the tragedy, an inspiring movement has taken root within the Paphos community. Individuals of Syrian origin have generously dedicated their time and skills over Friday and Saturday to aid in the repair efforts. Their voluntary work is a testament to the resilience and camaraderie of the local population, as they endeavor to bring the barber shop back to its original state.
The collective action highlights a community’s ability to transcend personal backgrounds and unite in the face of adversity. As the restoration progresses, it serves as a beacon of hope and exemplifies the strength found in unity.
