Employee’s Unauthorized Fuel Spree Uncovered
In a recent turn of events, a 31-year-old man finds himself in legal trouble after an extensive misuse of a company credit card. The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody following a meticulous investigation by Paphos police. The man is accused of using the credit card to fuel up vehicles, an action he repeated 80 times, resulting in a financial blow to the company.
The misuse of the credit card came to light when a 64-year-old car rental owner noticed irregularities with the card’s transactions. Between October and March, the card was used across four different petrol stations, accumulating charges amounting to €4,245. Deputy police operations chief in Paphos, Michalis Nikolaou, confirmed that the car rental owner’s report prompted a thorough review of CCTV footage and the collection of various police statements.
As the investigation unfolded, officers managed to secure a witness testimony that pointed directly at the 31-year-old employee. The testimony was a critical piece in corroborating the evidence gathered from the video footage and transaction records. Consequently, the man was arrested on Saturday and faced Paphos district court the following day.
During his court appearance, the judge ordered that the man be remanded for eight days as the investigation continues. This case serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of vigilance in monitoring company credit card usage and the potential consequences of abusing such privileges.
The business community is reminded to implement stringent checks and balances to prevent similar incidents. As companies often provide employees with credit cards to fuel up vehicles for business operations, this incident underscores the need for robust oversight to safeguard against unauthorized use.
