Police Sweep in Paphos District Targets Crime and Immigration Checks
In an effort to ramp up crime prevention and enforce immigration laws, a substantial police operation took place in the Paphos district early this morning. Assistant Police Director of Operations, Michael Nicolaou, detailed the extensive measures taken to ensure the legality of foreign residents in the area.
The operation, which spanned from 06:00 to 09:00, focused on various apartment complexes in Chloraka and Tremithousa. The first site of action was the “Agios Nikolaos” complex in Chloraka, which is subject to a specific decree that bans the settlement and residence of individuals. Despite the thorough inspection of approximately 300 apartments, Nicolaou reported that no residents were found.
The police then proceeded to the “Agios Georgios” apartments in the Tremithousa-Emba region. Here, officers executed a court warrant to search 12 apartments. They scrutinized 40 individuals but did not uncover any criminal activity or instances of illegal residency within the Republic of Cyprus.
Nicolaou emphasized the importance of these operations for maintaining public order and safety. He assured that similar searches are planned for the near future, indicating a continued commitment to crime prevention and the monitoring of foreign nationals residing in Cyprus.
The police’s proactive stance in the Paphos district is part of a broader strategy to ensure compliance with local laws and regulations. Apartment complexes have become focal points for these operations, as they often house a diverse mix of residents, including foreign nationals. By conducting these checks, authorities aim to deter criminal activity and uphold the integrity of immigration policies.
