Disy Leader Calls for Unity Amid Party Departures

In a recent statement, Disy leader Annita Demetriou addressed the issue of unity within the party, following a series of departures from its ranks. The comments were made on the periphery of a press conference where Demetriou responded to inquiries regarding the exit of several key members, including Paralimni deputy mayoral candidate Kleanthis Koutsofas, Paphos governor candidate Marios Tselepos, and notably, former government spokesman now turned Elam MEP candidate, Marios Pelekanos.

Demetriou emphasized the party’s commitment to moving forward as a united front, stating, “We are not going to deal with anything else other than setting out our political positions and our policy interventions.” She highlighted the importance of Disy’s performance in the forthcoming elections for the benefit of the country and reiterated that the party’s focus remains on political rather than personal issues.

The Disy leader made a pointed appeal to her party colleagues, urging them to eschew actions that could potentially harm the party’s integrity. “It serves no purpose at this time, if we really care about this party, to operate in a way that damages it,” she remarked, calling for protection of what she described as their ‘home’. Demetriou underscored that Disy is founded on principles and values that are paramount to the welfare of Cyprus.

Reflecting on Disy’s role since transitioning to the opposition after the last presidential elections, Demetriou asserted the party’s dedication to being a responsible opposition. She stated that Disy has consistently supported the government when necessary while maintaining a stance of further opposition in cases of disagreement. In her concluding remarks, Demetriou stressed the need for support from those who value Disy, “We never hid that we had to manage a difficult political situation after the outcome of the presidential elections and those who want to help and care about Disy should stand by us, with us, and not against us.”
