Wizz Air Celebrates Two Decades of Soaring Success in Cyprus
As Wizz Air, the Hungarian low-cost carrier, prepares to mark its 20th anniversary, its significant impact on the Cyprus tourism industry is undeniable. With a base established at Larnaca International Airport in 2010, Wizz Air has been instrumental in the island nation’s aviation sector, boasting a fleet with an average aircraft age of just 4.2 years. Despite a slight adjustment in their aircraft deployment from four Airbus A320 family aircraft in 2023 to three for 2024, the airline’s commitment to Cyprus remains steadfast.
Wizz Air’s dedication to sustainability has not gone unnoticed. The airline was honored with the “Global Environmental Sustainability Airline Group of the Year 2023” award by CAPA – Centre for Aviation and was recognized for having the “World’s 3rd Youngest Aircraft Fleet 2024” by ch-aviation. Additionally, World Finance magazine named it the “Most Sustainable Low-Cost Airline in 2023.”
The carrier’s role was pivotal during Cyprus’ record-breaking tourist season in 2023, transporting passengers from key markets and increasing seat capacity by 70%. This surge in tourism brought over 11 million foreign tourists to Cyprus, with Wizz Air maintaining a remarkable 99.63% flight completion rate. The airline’s operations have been estimated to inject €200 million into the local economy and support over 5,500 jobs in related sectors.
With over 7 million passengers carried to various destinations from their Larnaca base in 2023, Wizz Air is not resting on its laurels. In 2024, they plan to offer 1.3 million seats on 25 routes to 16 countries from Cyprus. The airline’s leading position at Larnaca Airport underscores its vital contribution to Cypriot air travel.
In line with its growth and commitment to the local economy, Wizz Air is conducting a cabin crew recruitment event on April 11, 2024, at Larco Hotel in Larnaca. Prospective applicants must meet various criteria, including being of legal age, fluent in English, and able to swim. This event underscores the airline’s continuous investment in the local workforce and its role as a key employer in the region.
As Wizz Air looks ahead, its trajectory in Cyprus is marked by robust growth, environmental consciousness, and a strong partnership with the local tourism industry. The airline’s success story is set to continue as it soars into its third decade of operations on the island.
