Limassol’s Traffic Challenges and Solutions
At the recent For Limassol conference held at Frederick University, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades highlighted the pressing traffic issues in Limassol, warning that without proper action, residents could face a rapid decline in quality of life. Vafeades underscored the urgency of addressing the challenges brought on by the city’s significant growth.
The minister emphasized the critical role of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, which is set to be implemented by 2026. He cautioned, however, that given Limassol’s fast-paced development, this plan might not be enough. “We need to implement it and do even more,” Vafeades stated, suggesting that interim measures are necessary to alleviate current traffic woes.
Vafeades discussed the success of the Park & Ride service in Nicosia and announced plans to introduce similar schemes in Limassol. These are expected to be operational by the end of the month, with several locations already earmarked for Park & Ride facilities. The aim is to reduce the number of cars entering the city center, although he acknowledged that without bus lanes, the success might differ from Nicosia’s experience.
To improve intercity travel, Vafeades proposed express bus services with fewer stops to shorten journey times. Enhancements to the passenger experience are also on the agenda, with new bus stops and electronic boards planned. Furthermore, he revealed that tenders for smart traffic lights are anticipated by early May, with installation expected before year’s end.
Long-term urban planning solutions were also addressed by Vafeades, who presented data indicating that traffic congestion in Limassol could worsen over the next decade. The ministry aims to bolster public transportation with quick, easy, and eco-friendly solutions. Challenges such as altitude differences have delayed the northern bypass construction, but a new highway north of Limassol is being considered to improve access for mountain communities and potentially ease traffic congestion.
