Advancing the Digital Citizen Initiative
In a recent cabinet meeting, President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized the need for his cabinet to intensify efforts on the government’s ambitious “digital citizen” application. The application, first mentioned in his “State of the Republic” address, is designed to encompass a wide array of digital services that citizens can expect from the state, marking a significant leap towards digital transformation.
Christodoulides is keen on receiving an update on the application’s development from Nikodemos Damianou, the Digital Policy Deputy Minister. The President highlighted that the digital transition is not just about combating bureaucracy but also about enhancing the nation’s competitiveness. He envisions a platform that revolutionizes how citizens interact with state services.
The plan is to consolidate all available services into one accessible platform, allowing citizens to navigate redesigned government websites that adhere to a common standard. “We are one government, and all ministries must have the same website, and be able to offer the opportunity to people to do what they need to do electronically,” Christodoulides stated, underlining the importance of a unified and user-friendly digital presence.
With an eye on efficiency and service delivery, the President expressed his hope that the application will be ready for public presentation and operational in the latter half of the year. He reminded cabinet members of their individual responsibilities in ensuring the fulfillment of this public commitment.
Beyond the digital citizen application, updates were anticipated from other key areas. Labour Minister Yiannis Panayiotou was expected to report on discussions around employing third-country nationals in Cyprus’ workforce. Additionally, Health Minister Michael Damianos was likely to address the recent challenges faced by medical storage facilities due to flooding and the ongoing search for new premises.
President Christodoulides’ push for digitalization reflects a broader commitment to modernize Cyprus’ public services, making them more accessible and efficient for its citizens.
