National Autism Strategy and Action Plan Gets Green Light
In a significant move towards inclusivity, the Cabinet on Wednesday sanctioned the establishment of a comprehensive national autism strategy, set to span until 2028. This ambitious initiative encompasses 53 actions distributed across seven thematic pillars, meticulously designed to address the evolving needs of individuals with autism throughout their lifetime.
The thematic pillars are strategically focused on critical areas such as research, early detection and diagnosis, and health and medical intervention. Furthermore, they aim to enhance early child and family intervention, bolster education opportunities, ensure social protection and independent living, and promote inclusion in work, as well as participation in entertainment, culture, and society.
One of the key features of this strategy is the development of a national electronic platform dedicated to autism. The coordination of the strategy falls under the purview of the social welfare deputy ministry. Other ministries including labour, health, education, transport, and finance are actively involved, ensuring a multi-faceted approach to supporting individuals with autism.
Social Welfare Deputy Minister Marilena Evangelou highlighted the strategy’s alignment with the United Nations’ convention on the rights of persons with disabilities. She emphasized the government’s commitment to “fulfil the rights of people with autism as equal members of society,” aiming to enhance their quality of life and ensure their full participation and integration into society.
Evangelou also pointed out that this unified strategy will allow for better coordination and a holistic response to the challenges faced by individuals with autism. With cabinet approval secured, the next phase involves convening a national committee to establish permanent sub-committees, which will be instrumental in driving the strategy forward.
