Monk Breaks Silence Amidst Monastery Scandal
In a recent turn of events, Archimandrite Nektarios of the Osiou Avakoum monastery has publicly addressed the serious allegations of sexual harassment, abuse, and money laundering that have rocked the religious community. On Wednesday, he expressed his distress over the situation in a candid Facebook post, stating that the ordeal has “shaken his soul” but has not weakened his faith.
Nektarios firmly denied having sexual relations with another monk and claimed he was “illegally kicked out from the monastery.” He described the shock experienced by the monks on March 5, when authorities seized a safe box containing €800,000 from the monastery premises. “We unexpectedly saw hooded men invade the monastery, violating the sanctity of its space,” he recounted.
The monk lamented the tarnished reputation of the monastery members, once respected and loved by the people and the Bishop, now accused of deceit and theft. He also mentioned “inhumane treatment” and being coerced into signing a false confession. Nektarios emphasized that the evidence against them was obtained illegally and without their knowledge.
Addressing leaked videos that showed monks using coarse language, Nektarios apologized for any offense caused. He explained that while their behavior might have been inappropriate, it was a result of human weakness and did not have any malicious intent or further implications.
Nektarios also clarified that having bank accounts and real estate does not imply wrongdoing. As clergymen, they are required to manage finances for salary payments and are entitled to property ownership. He defended the integrity of the Holy Cross of Saint Porphyrios, denying any exploitation of the sacred relic.
Currently, a six-member team is investigating the allegations against two monks at Osiou Avakoum. Despite the gravity of the accusations, which include possession of large sums of cash, property holdings, and inappropriate sexual conduct captured on CCTV, Nektarios assured supporters that they will face this trial with resilience and faith, seeking a fair judgment and hoping to restore their honor and dignity.
