Empowering Sustainable Tourism in Europe: I-STARS Project Awards Grants
In an effort to foster sustainable tourism across Europe, the I-STARS project has successfully concluded its selection process, awarding grants to 125 tourism businesses. These enterprises, hailing from Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Italy, and Spain, have each been granted up to €5,600 to enhance their sustainability practices.
The initiative began with an open call in July 2023, which drew a large number of applicants from the tourism sector. This response highlighted the industry’s increasing dedication to embedding sustainability at the heart of their operations. With the financial aid provided by the I-STARS project, these selected businesses are now poised to embark on a variety of projects designed to bolster their sustainable credentials.
One of the key areas of focus for grant recipients is obtaining sustainability certifications. This step not only bolsters their reputation as environmentally conscious establishments but also aligns them with international standards for sustainable operations. Additionally, other businesses will channel the funds into crafting detailed sustainability strategies and action plans that resonate with their unique business activities.
Strategic investments are also being made in critical areas such as food waste management, waste reduction, and energy efficiency improvements. These measures are expected to substantially decrease the ecological footprint of these businesses and simultaneously elevate the quality of their offerings to tourists.
The European Union, which co-finances the I-STARS project, envisions this financial support and guidance as a catalyst for a broader shift towards sustainable business models within the tourism industry. The project also promotes a collaborative environment, enabling participants to share knowledge and best practices, thereby nurturing a culture of innovation and ongoing enhancement throughout the sector.
The coordination of the I-STARS project is led by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Keve), in partnership with organizations from Greece, Ireland, Italy, and Spain, all backed by European Union funding.
