Addressing Extreme Violence in Schools: A Plan for Support and Prevention

The gravity of the situation was underscored by DEPA MP Alekos Tryfonides’s revelation of a disturbing incident in a gymnasium where the victim continues to suffer due to procedural delays.
The committee’s discussions centered on the urgent need for a specialized unit to address the needs of children exhibiting extreme behavior. This unit would provide necessary support and facilitate their reintegration into their educational environment. It was acknowledged that while there are laws in place for the establishment of day centers for such cases, implementation has been lacking. Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, addressed the committee, outlining the government’s commitment to creating a proposal for an alternative attendance program tailored for students facing severe challenges.
Michaelidou also highlighted the introduction of an electronic student file system, designed to track students from a young age and provide immediate access to their information for various support services. She emphasized the importance of prevention and timely intervention, stating that ensuring a safe school environment free from violence and delinquency is a top priority.
The meeting also included input from various stakeholders, including police representatives, social welfare officials, child protection advocates, educational organizations, and parents. This collaborative approach underscores the community’s collective responsibility in addressing and preventing school violence and supporting students in need.
