U.S.-Built Jetty to Bolster Aid to Gaza Strip
In a significant development for humanitarian efforts, the Gaza Strip is set to receive approximately 1,500 tonnes of aid weekly with the impending operation of a U.S.-built jetty. Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, marking his first year in office, announced the expected functionality of the jetty by month’s end.
The ‘Amaltheia’ initiative, despite a temporary halt in World Food Kitchen shipments from Larnaca port after a tragic incident, is poised to resume. Kombos revealed that international donors have pledged financial support for the necessary infrastructure, with the United Arab Emirates contributing a notable $15 million to the Amaltheia Fund.
Highlighting the importance of the sea passage in lifting the naval blockade of Gaza, Kombos underscored the global recognition and support the initiative has garnered. The project has attracted attention at the highest levels, including commendations from U.S. President Biden and visits from key European leaders.
While mourning the loss of seven aid workers from an Israeli military strike, Kombos emphasized the ongoing commitment to the humanitarian mission. He also pointed out the economic advantages for Cyprus, with local markets benefiting from cargo preparations and an inter-ministerial committee ensuring the initiative’s alignment with economic interests.
The Amaltheia Fund operates with transparency and accountability, aiming to manage purchases and services essential for maintaining the aid corridor. This includes developing Cyprus’s infrastructure and securing equipment that will remain in Cyprus to support logistics.
Kombos also touched on Cyprus’s strategic role in regional humanitarian responses. The country has facilitated repatriation efforts from Sudan and Israel and prepared for potential evacuations from Lebanon. These actions have cemented Cyprus’s reputation as a regional security hub during crises.
With continued international praise, Cyprus stands firm in its commitment to providing emergency humanitarian aid and coordinating relief efforts in the region.
