Emergency NSC Meeting Convened Amid Middle East Tensions
In response to the escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Iran and Israel, O Presidente Christodoulides convocou uma reunião de emergência do Conselho de Segurança Nacional (CSN) yesterday. The council’s session was aimed at discussing the potential repercussions of a new outbreak of violence on Cyprus and its preparedness to handle arising challenges.
During the meeting, various scenarios were deliberated, including the possibility of an Iranian strike on Israel and a subsequent Israeli retaliation against Tehran. The focus was on
President Christodoulides’ team emphasized the importance of reviewing migration situations and the overall regional stability to prevent public alarm. The NSC also considered the likelihood of increased migration from Lebanon and Israel, should these areas become targets.
Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis reassured the public that the NSC’s role is to continuously evaluate unfolding events and exchange opinions on these evaluations. He confirmed that no immediate change in security measures was necessary following the assessment presented to President Christodoulides by each competent Ministry.
Addressing concerns about potential strikes on Israeli targets in Cyprus and the broader implications for regional security, Letymbiotis stated that the government does not harbor such worries. He reiterated Cyprus’s international call to prevent the escalation of the crisis and highlighted ongoing efforts to manage increased migration flows effectively.
Finally, regarding President Christodoulides’ invitation to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to visit Lebanon, Letymbiotis mentioned that there are no new developments to announce but communication between officials remains ongoing.
