EU Commissioner Highlights Cyprus’ Renewable Energy Potential
In a recent conversation with the Cyprus News Agency, EU Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevicius, acknowledged that Cyprus’ contribution to the EU renewable energy target has been modest but emphasized the significant strides the country has made towards green reforms. Sinkevicius pointed out the “untapped potential of renewable energy in the country,” suggesting that the updated national Recovery and Resilience Plan could play a pivotal role in harnessing this potential.
With a visit to Cyprus scheduled for Monday, the Commissioner addressed concerns regarding Cyprus’ management of Natura 2000 areas and the consequent decision to refer the country to the EU Court of Justice. Sinkevicius stressed the necessity of applying appropriate measures to ensure these conservation areas function effectively. Nonetheless, he maintained that environmental protection and tourism development are not mutually exclusive objectives.
The Commissioner also delved into the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy, discussing how the fishing sector might adapt to environmental challenges while safeguarding the livelihoods of industry professionals. He underscored the importance of balancing ecological sustainability with economic viability in the fisheries sector.
Furthermore, Sinkevicius highlighted the EU’s role in fostering bi-communal environmental cooperation in Cyprus. He noted that through technical support, funding, and environmentally beneficial projects, the EU is actively supporting initiatives that serve both communities on the island.
Addressing broader environmental concerns, Sinkevicius commented on the need for proactive measures against increased wildfires due to climate change. He also discussed reforestation policies, air pollution control, and strategies to combat the rising occurrence of dust storms in Cyprus, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to environmental challenges.
The Commissioner’s remarks underline a recognition of Cyprus’ potential for renewable energy expansion and a commitment to supporting the country’s environmental initiatives within the broader framework of EU policies and goals.
