Renewed Focus on Economic Ties Between Cyprus and Japan
In a significant move to bolster economic ties, Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister George Papanastasiou of Cyprus and Japan’s Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Economy Taku Ishii have mutually expressed a desire to enhance the business ties between their respective nations.
Their meeting in Japan, which was part of a larger business delegation trip organized by the Cypriot ministry, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Cyprus Trade Centre in Tokyo, marked a pivotal moment for the two countries. Papanastasiou, leading the delegation, took the opportunity to share insights from his visit, emphasizing Japan’s prowess in technology and communications, as well as its cultural ethos of dedication and discipline.
Highlighting the success of a business forum in Tokyo that drew over 120 participants including government officials, business leaders, and media representatives, Papanastasiou showcased Cyprus as an attractive international business hub. He underscored the potential benefits for Japanese entrepreneurs looking to penetrate European markets through Cyprus.
The Cypriot minister also detailed his country’s energy policies, touching on renewable energy initiatives, natural gas explorations within Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and the strategic electricity interconnection project linking Cyprus, Greece, and Israel.
On his part, Vice-Minister Ishii noted the commonalities shared by Cyprus and Japan as island nations. He acknowledged the growing interest of Japanese firms in expanding their operations to Cyprus, recognizing the strategic advantages it offers.
Their discussions concluded with a reaffirmed commitment to continue dialogue aimed at strengthening the energy, commerce, and business ties between Cyprus and Japan. This renewed dedication to collaboration signifies a promising future for bilateral relations and economic prosperity for both countries.
