Controversy Surrounds Limassol Raid and Resulting Tragedy
In the wake of a controversial raid in Limassol, Cyprus, the police force is facing scrutiny over their actions, which led to the tragic death of 23-year-old Anisur Rahman. The incident, which occurred in a building listed as dangerous, has sparked protests and allegations of police misconduct.
A text message allegedly from one of the Bangladeshi nationals involved in the incident was publicly read, claiming that the officers, dressed in civilian clothes, forcibly entered their apartment and attacked them. The message detailed a harrowing scene where doors were broken and residents were allegedly abused. This account starkly contrasts the official police narrative, which maintains that only two officers attended the scene and gained consent before entering the premises.
The aftermath of the raid saw Rahman lose his life after jumping from the fifth-floor window, while another man is currently in serious condition in the hospital. As criticism mounted, a complaint was lodged with an independent authority responsible for investigating police conduct.
Responding to the growing backlash, the police issued a statement on Saturday night denying any claims of forced entry or violence during the raid. However, questions have been raised about the credibility of the police’s version of events, especially amid reports that the Bangladeshi nationals had not been provided access to legal representation.
Lawyer Michalis Paraskevas emphasized to the Cyprus Mail that every individual, regardless of their legal status in Cyprus, is entitled to legal counsel. Reports suggest that two of the individuals are being detained in Larnaca with deportation pending.
The police have not addressed these allegations directly but have reiterated that all detained individuals were residing in Cyprus illegally. No further information has been disclosed about the landlord who allegedly rented out the dangerous apartment for €2,000 to 11 people.
Authorities have urged anyone with additional information on the incident to contact CID Headquarters or the Citizen’s Line. The community awaits further developments as this case continues to unfold.
