Ministry of Agriculture Shares Protection Tips Against Venomous Snakes
As the warm summer months approach, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment has issued guidance to help the public safeguard themselves against encounters with venomous snakes, particularly the blunt-nosed viper, known scientifically as Macrovipera lebetina. This species is noted for its potent venom, which can have severe effects on humans if bitten.
The Ministry advises against panic or aggression if one encounters a venomous snake. Instead, individuals should remain calm and avoid disturbing or attempting to kill the reptile. The recommended course of action is to slowly move away from the snake’s vicinity.
For outdoor activities during the summer, the Ministry suggests practical measures such as wearing high shoes and long trousers. This attire serves as a protective barrier in the event of accidentally stepping on a snake. Additionally, it is advised to use a stick or pole to gently disturb grass and bushes ahead, which can prompt any snakes to move away, as they are sensitive to ground vibrations.
In the unfortunate instance of a snake bite, the Ministry’s protection tips include seeking immediate medical attention at the nearest hospital while minimizing movement to prevent rapid spread of venom through the body.
Within Cyprus, there are eight identified snake species, three of which are venomous. However, only the blunt-nosed viper poses a significant threat to humans. The other two venomous species, the Montpellier snake (Malpolon insignitus) and the cat snake (Telescopus fallax), have venom that is not considered dangerously potent to humans.
The Ministry also emphasizes the ecological importance of snakes in maintaining balance within nature. Many snake species contribute positively by preying on and controlling populations of pests, such as insects and rodents. These creatures are an integral part of biodiversity and play a crucial role in ecosystem conservation.
Encouraging public education on local snake species and appropriate response strategies, the Ministry underscores the value of snake conservation and awareness for both safety and environmental well-being.
