Government Spokesman Addresses Security Measures Amid Regional Tensions
In light of the recent Iran’s attack on Israel, Cyprus has been on high alert, with government officials assuring the public of the country’s safety and preparedness. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis informed the media on Monday that the National Security Council is actively monitoring the situation and will keep the public updated on any new developments.
When questioned about potential threats to Cyprus, Letymbiotis clarified that while there is no immediate danger, the government remains vigilant due to the rising tensions in the region. He reiterated that Cyprus is not participating in any military actions, referencing President Nikos Christodoulides’ previous statement asserting the island’s non-involvement.
The National Security Council convened for a meeting that lasted just over an hour, during which they reviewed both internal and external security measures. “We are alert, we are monitoring the situation very carefully,” Letymbiotis added, emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and security.
Across the divide, Turkey’s unofficial representative in Northern Cyprus, Metin Feyzioğlu, spoke to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) about Turkey’s role in ensuring the security of Turkish Cypriots following the recent escalation. Feyzioğlu highlighted Turkey’s unwavering support and its role as a guarantor of peace in the region.
Following an emergency meeting led by Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, Feyzioğlu praised the longstanding peace maintained for half a century and credited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s leadership. He also mentioned the ongoing efforts by the Turkish foreign ministry to foster peace.
Tatar addressed his community, urging calm and expressing optimism that tensions will subside. He reassured that despite the unpredictable geopolitical climate, there is no imminent threat to their safety. “The Turkish Cypriot people have always had a say in the matters concerning our region and want to live in peace and security,” he told Turkish Cypriot media.
The statements from both sides of Cyprus reflect a shared desire for stability and peace amidst a tense regional backdrop. As governments work to ensure government security, citizens are urged to remain informed and trust in their leaders’ efforts to safeguard their nations.
