Success on the Sea: Cyprus-Piraeus Ferry Service Thrives
The maritime link between Cyprus and Greece, specifically the Cyprus-Piraeus ferry route, has been hailed as a resounding success by Deputy Shipping Minister Marina Hadjimanoli. As the service prepares to enter its third year, it boasts impressive numbers, having ferried 7,407 passengers and 455 pets aboard the Cypriot-flagged ship Daleela last year. In addition, a significant 2,496 vehicles were transported, underscoring the route’s appeal to a diverse range of travelers.
Hadjimanoli highlighted the ferry’s contribution to tourism, noting that it has carved out a new niche for those seeking to travel between Cyprus and continental Europe. The upcoming season promises to maintain the high-quality services passengers have come to expect, with the only change being that departures will exclusively be from Limassol, foregoing the previous arrangement that included Larnaca.
The decision to streamline the departure point to Limassol was primarily financially driven. A notable reduction in cruise ship traffic and more competitive pricing were cited by Politis as key factors. Additionally, logistical challenges at Larnaca port have influenced this strategic move.
Onboard the Daleela, passengers will continue to enjoy various amenities such as different class cabins, ‘airline’ seats, two coffee bars, spacious lounges, a restaurant, and even a casino area. Scandro Holdings, the operator of the service, has announced that reservations for the summer season will open on Wednesday. With itineraries commencing on May 29 from Limassol and concluding on September 3 from Piraeus, travelers are encouraged to secure their tickets early. Prices are expected to remain relatively stable compared to the previous year.
The Deputy Minister expressed optimism regarding the ferry service’s future beyond the subsidised period, with data supporting its ongoing viability. There are also aspirations to expand maritime connections to other neighboring countries, potentially broadening the horizons for regional sea travel.
