Freedom24 Backs the Cyprus Closed Chess Championship
In the scenic setting of the Elias Beach Hotel in Limassol, the Cyprus Closed Chess Championship concluded on April 14, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s chess scene. The month-long event, supported by Freedom24, not only showcased the strategic prowess of local chess players but also set the stage for the formation of the national chess team.
Olga Milko, Freedom24’s Business Development Director, was present to celebrate the achievements of the chess aficionados.
The championship witnessed intense competition, with Konstantinos Michaelides emerging as a seven-time champion in the men’s category. He amassed an impressive 10 points over 11 matches. Hot on his heels were Alexandros Isaakidis and Raphael Antoniou, who secured the second and third spots. Panikos Savva and Lucas Kefalas rounded out the top five.
On the women’s side, Christianna Markidou triumphed with seven points from nine matches. Christina Buzana and Larisa Sokolova tied for the runner-up position, while Aida Paunescu and Eleni Pika completed the list of top contenders.
The top five players from each category earned their place in the national team. They will carry the Cypriot flag at two prestigious events: the World Chess Olympiad in Budapest and the European Small Nations Chess Championship in Andorra.
As these skilled players gear up for international glory, we extend our best wishes to Cyprus’ chess representatives for their forthcoming challenges on the global stage.
