Expanding Digital Horizons: Cyprus’ Fibreoptic Future
In a significant move to enhance digital connectivity in Cyprus, the government has unveiled a €35 million project aimed at establishing “ultra-high-speed” fibreoptic internet networks in rural regions. The initiative, announced by Digital Policy Deputy Minister Nikodemos Damianou, targets areas previously overlooked by private investment. This ambitious plan is set to be fully realized by 2026, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital infrastructure development.
The deputy ministry is not only focusing on the expansion of fibreoptic coverage but also on making it accessible to the masses. An additional €10 million has been allocated to subsidize new fibreoptic internet subscriptions for an impressive 82,000 households. This effort underscores the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and equipping citizens with the tools necessary for active participation in the digital economy.
According to Damianou, the overarching goal is to position Cyprus as a pioneer in universal gigabit connectivity. The project is expected to have far-reaching implications, fostering learning, work, and entrepreneurial endeavors. Moreover, it aims to rejuvenate rural communities, making them more appealing for young families, investors, and entrepreneurs. The announcement aligns with recent commendations from European Commissioner for cohesion and reforms Elisa Ferreira, who acknowledged Cyprus’ swift progress in its digital transition. Supported by the European Union, Cyprus is on track to significantly enhance its connectivity through both fixed and wireless networks. Ferreira’s remarks underscore the positive trajectory of digital convergence within the EU and the potential unlocked by these technological reforms for businesses and individuals alike.
