Rescue Operation Off Limassol Coast
In what could have been a maritime tragedy, quick action from the coast guard averted disaster off the coast of Limassol on Tuesday afternoon. A small vessel, carrying two individuals, found itself in distress near the fish farms in Limassol bay. The incident prompted an immediate response from the Search and Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), which oversees such emergencies.
The JRCC was alerted at approximately 4:15 PM about the dire situation unfolding in the waters. Without hesitation, the national plan Nearchos was activated, setting in motion a well-coordinated rescue effort. The coast guard’s patrol boat, Morphou, was dispatched to the scene, where it successfully located and rescued the pair from their sinking boat.
Following the rescue, the two individuals were swiftly transported to Limassol port. Upon arrival, they were handed over to the care of the state health services, known as Okypy, which had an ambulance ready and waiting. The health status of the rescued individuals has not been disclosed, leaving their condition a matter of concern until further information is made available.
The JRCC’s efficient handling of the incident stands as a testament to the preparedness and professionalism of Cyprus’s emergency services. The successful operation underlines the importance of quick and coordinated responses to maritime incidents, potentially saving lives and preventing further escalation of dangerous situations at sea.
As the local community awaits updates on the condition of those involved, there is a collective sense of relief that what could have ended in tragedy was instead met with a prompt and effective rescue operation.
