In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, Larnaca Public Transport (LPT) joined forces with the Municipality of Larnaca to host an informative conference on the upcoming Seamless Shared Urban Mobility (SUM) project. This pilot initiative, scheduled to commence in June 2024, is set to revolutionize multimodal mobility within the city.

The event, held on April 17, 2024, saw LPT CEO Julio Tironi highlight the SUM project’s pivotal role in Cyprus’ shift towards green mobility. Tironi extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, as well as the project partners, for their collaborative efforts. He also acknowledged the Municipality of Larnaca for facilitating the conference.

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras took the opportunity to underline the town’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions. By taking early action, Vyras aims to circumvent the challenges faced by larger urban centers. Andreas Nikiforou, representing Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, lauded the SUM project’s innovative approach and underscored the importance of achieving seamless, safe, and environmentally-friendly urban transport.

The SUM project benefits from EU co-financing and has rallied 30 partners from across 15 European and associated countries. These collaborators are tasked with developing cutting-edge mobility strategies. As part of this initiative, nine living labs are being established in various cities including Munich, Athens, and Larnaca. In Larnaca, key partners such as MobyX, Nextbike, and Cunisa are contributing to the living lab.

A detailed survey of local transport preferences has informed the pilot project’s strategy in Larnaca. The plan includes enhancing the bicycle and e-bike networks alongside the public bus system. Moreover, the PameApp will integrate additional mobility providers like Nextbike and Tier1, offering residents a comprehensive transportation platform.

This pilot project not only promises to transform Larnaca’s urban mobility landscape but also sets a precedent for expanding these innovations to other cities across Cyprus, marking a significant stride towards a greener future.
