Strengthening the Fire Service with New Recruits
In a significant move to bolster the ranks of the Fire Service, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Charalambous, announced the near completion of the recruitment of firefighters. This addition will see 259 new firefighters joining the existing force, which currently stands at 680 members. The announcement came during a speech at the graduation ceremony for 27 Trainee Firefighters of Class No. 3, who joined the service on April 5, 2021.
Charalambous highlighted that this influx of new personnel represents a substantial increase relative to the current strength of the Fire Service. He emphasized the government’s commitment to not only strengthening the Fire Service but also enhancing the state’s overall response to the growing demands of fire safety and protection.
The challenges facing the Fire Service are ever-evolving, with factors such as environmental changes, technological advancements, and an uptick in natural and technological disasters due to the climate crisis. The minister acknowledged these challenges and underscored the increasing significance, demand, and danger in the role of firefighters.
With an eye on continuous improvement, Charalambous noted that upgrading and modernizing both the material-technical infrastructure and firefighting equipment are key priorities. These efforts, along with ongoing personnel training, are crucial for enhancing operational capabilities and ensuring citizens feel secure.
The minister also recognized the high level of service provided by the Fire Service and assured that it would not only continue but also be further improved. As the new fire season approaches, he stressed the importance of timely preparation, operational planning, and preventive measures to mitigate the risk of major wildfires.
In a call to action directed at the firefighters, Charalambous urged them to maintain the highest level of operational readiness to meet new demands and stand by the citizens. He expressed hope that human factors would not be the leading cause of fires this year, thereby preserving the Cypriot countryside.
