Controversy at Idalion Lyceum Event
In a recent turn of events that has sparked widespread condemnation, the Cyprus Student Coordinating Committee (PSEM) has released a statement detailing a disturbing incident at the Idalion Lyceum. On Wednesday, during preparations for an event commemorating 50 years of occupation, attended by Education Minister Athena Michaelidou and other dignitaries, a confrontation arose between teachers and student representatives.
According to PSEM, banners bearing the slogans “All armies out, independent island”, “Cyprus belongs to its people”, and “Cyprus – one homeland, one people” were agreed to be displayed at the venue. This decision was reached after discussions between the school management and the event’s organizing committee, led by the Central Student Council.
However, moments before the event’s commencement, some teachers reportedly approached members of the Central Student Council in an aggressive manner. The PSEM statement alleges that these teachers physically assaulted the student representatives and threatened them to remove the banners, citing disagreement with their content. Despite the students’ explanation that the banners were approved by relevant authorities and represented the official stance of the student movement, the teachers are said to have forcibly removed them, disregarding instructions from the school management.

The incident has been labeled by PSEM as a
In their call to action, PSEM urges both the school management and Minister Michaelidou to intervene and hold the involved teachers accountable. They demand formal complaints be lodged against the two teachers in question and stress that a mere investigation without subsequent action would imply complicity in the incident.
The PSEM’s strong condemnation of the assault and removal of banners at Idalion Lyceum has highlighted ongoing tensions within educational environments regarding political expression and student rights.
