Challenges in Hospital Renovation Highlighted at Health Committee Meeting
At a recent Health Committee meeting of the Parliament, concerns were raised about the state of Kyperounta Hospital, with particular focus on its renovation and the conditions faced by patients and staff. Dr. Marinos Lemesis, a physician at the hospital, expressed his dismay over the substandard conditions, especially in the ward rooms designated for tuberculosis patients. According to Dr. Lemesis, these rooms lack essential amenities such as toilets, showers, and proper ventilation—a critical oversight given the nature of the illnesses treated there.
While acknowledging that timelines for upgrading the hospital’s facilities have been established and that some projects have been successfully completed, Dr. Lemesis pointed out that significant issues remain unresolved. He emphasized the urgency of making the new tuberculosis clinic fully operational, including the necessary negative pressure units that are vital for treating patients with tuberculosis. Additionally, he highlighted that a CT scanner delivered to the hospital in 2023 has yet to be installed due to delays in opening the ground floor for radiological equipment.
The community leader echoed Dr. Lemesis’s frustrations, expressing anger over broken promises and delayed actions. He emphasized his responsibility to represent the interests of the 100,000 inhabitants of the mountainous region, demanding transparency and accountability for the unfulfilled commitments.
In response to these concerns, Charalambos Charilaou, a spokesperson for the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO), acknowledged the need for serious upgrades at the Troodos hospital building. He assured that SHSO is aware of the deficiencies and has plans in place to address them. The spokesperson referred to promoted processes aimed at improving the hospital’s infrastructure and ensuring that it meets modern healthcare standards.
The meeting highlighted the pressing need for transparency and expedited action in hospital renovations to ensure patient safety and staff well-being. The Kyperounta Hospital serves as a critical healthcare provider for the region’s population, and stakeholders are calling for immediate improvements to its facilities.
