EU Sends Positive Message to Ankara, President Christodoulides Satisfied with Summit Outcomes
At the heart of the recent European Union summit, President Nikos Christodoulides conveyed a sense of accomplishment regarding the Union’s stance towards Turkey. The President highlighted the strategic discussion on Turkey, noting the successful alignment of Euro-Turkish relations with the Cyprus issue. “From the beginning, we set a goal, the substantive connection of Euro-Turkish relations with the Cyprus issue, which is clearly evident in the Conclusions and the discussion held,” he stated.
President Christodoulides emphasized the deliberate nature of the EU’s approach, sending a “positive message” to Ankara. He pointed out that the realization of this message hinges on “specific positive developments in Euro-Turkish relations and progress in Cyprus.” This sentiment comes at a crucial time as the UN Secretary-General makes efforts to resume negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
The President extended his gratitude to his European counterparts for their support during the summit discussions. He specifically thanked the leaders of Greece, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, as well as the President of the Council and the President of the Commission. Their interventions, according to Christodoulides, underscored the connection between Euro-Turkish relations and Cyprus and recognized Cyprus’s constructive role.
Addressing the Middle East developments, President Christodoulides shared that a collective stance was taken to avoid exacerbating tensions in the region. He was pleased to report that Cyprus’s position on reconsidering the status for certain areas of Syria received considerable backing from several states, including Denmark, Austria, Italy, and Greece. This reassessment, after 14 years, is expected to significantly impact migration issues.
On a related note, President Christodoulides revealed his upcoming visit to Lebanon with Ursula von der Leyen on May 2nd. They plan to announce an economic support package for Lebanon aimed at tackling migration and other challenges. Additionally, Charles Michel expressed intentions to hold a special EU summit with Arab states before his term concludes, with the Syrian situation being a key topic.
The EU’s positive message towards Turkey and its connection to the Cyprus issue marks a significant diplomatic stride. The summit’s outcomes reflect a concerted effort by EU leaders to address regional challenges while fostering constructive relations with Turkey.
