Progress in Cyprus Talks Linked to Euro-Turkish Relations
In a significant development at the extraordinary European Council in Brussels, member states have reiterated their unwavering support for resolving the Cyprus issue. The Council’s commitment aligns with the United Nations framework and adheres to the resolutions of the UN Security Council. Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis highlighted the success of the government’s strategy to interlink the progress in Cyprus negotiations with Euro-Turkish relations.
The appointment of Maria Angela Holguin as the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Cyprus was met with approval by the European Council. This move signals a renewed impetus to rekindle settlement talks. The President of the European Council expressed readiness for the EU to actively support the UN-led process, emphasizing the importance of progress in these talks.
Letymbiotis conveyed on Trito that the European Council has issued a strong message to Turkey, encouraging constructive engagement in the Cyprus talks as a pathway to enhancing Euro-Turkish relations. He pointed out that paragraphs 9 and 10 of the Conclusions draw significant attention to the EU’s focus on advancements in Cyprus.
Additionally, the strategic dialogue concerning Euro-Turkish relations has been referred to the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER), ensuring that all member states will participate in shaping this relationship. This referral was one of Nicosia’s proposals during the Council, marking a pivotal step in collective decision-making.
Looking ahead, President Nikos Christodoulides and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen are scheduled to visit Lebanon on May 2. The spokesperson underscored that a key topic of discussion will be the package of additional economic support for Lebanon. While details are still being finalized, there is optimism that substantial progress will be made by the time of their visit, enabling President von der Leyen to present information to Lebanese leaders.
