Monks Seek Dismissal of Ecclesiastical Case Amid Controversy
In a recent development, the legal team representing the monks of Osiou Avakoum has urged for a cessation of the ongoing investigations and ecclesiastical procedures. The monks’ attorney, Anastasios Vavouskos, highlighted that the archdiocese’s actions are in violation of church law, as the monks have already been subjected to prior sentencing for the alleged crimes under scrutiny.
The case has been shrouded in ambiguity, with Vavouskos pointing out that the Holy Synod has not acknowledged any correspondence from the monks’ legal representatives, leaving them in a state of uncertainty. Furthermore, Vavouskos criticized the church for not clarifying the charges against the monks, and he argued that the case should be annulled by the church itself, given that Bishop Isaias has already issued a sentence.
Amidst the legal battle, an incident involving a fake social media account has come to light. A profile, purportedly linked to a priest connected with Tamassos Bishop Isaias, was found to be fraudulent and has since been deleted. The priest, who preferred anonymity, clarified that he had no intention of testifying against Isaias and had been called as a witness in police investigations concerning allegations made by the monks.
The controversy extends to the monks’ confessions, which they claim were extracted under duress. Ex-police chief Kypros Michaelides, now a member of the bishopric’s throne committee, recounted the emotional confession session where tears were shed by all involved, including Isaias. Michaelides described how the monks sought mercy and forgiveness over the speakerphone from Archbishop Georgios, who offered reassurance of God’s benevolence.
As investigations continue, the ecclesiastical community watches closely, with many awaiting clarity on this complex matter that intertwines legal proceedings with deep-seated religious convictions.
