Health Minister Highlights Advances in Cyprus Healthcare
In a recent press conference, Health Minister Michael Damianos celebrated the progress made in Cyprus’s healthcare system, emphasizing the ministry’s dedication to enhancing patient care. Damianos, marking his first 100 days in office, highlighted the implementation of an expenses coverage plan for patients and their escorts seeking treatment abroad, fulfilling a long-awaited need.
The minister also commended the increase in subsidies for infertility treatments, boosting the amount from €2,500 to €3,500. This revision is part of a broader strategy to address various health challenges, including mental health and nutritional disorders. Further, Damianos announced the government’s commitment to a new cancer prevention program and updates to the national strategies for diabetes and rare diseases.
Legislative reforms are underway to improve healthcare services’ efficiency, with drafts focusing on rehabilitation centers and university hospitals. February 2024 saw significant developments with the inauguration of the new haemodialysis unit at Paphos hospital and pulmonology clinics at Troodos hospital. Additionally, investments totaling €22 million have been approved for public hospital infrastructure and medical equipment.
New healthcare initiatives include tackling transplants and eating disorders, along with the introduction of methadone treatments for opioid use disorder. The ministry is also preparing to launch the office of the ‘Patient’s Advocate’, with legislation expected to reach parliament in May.
Damianos acknowledged challenges such as long waiting times in emergency departments but noted improvements, including an operational pediatric A&E department at Nicosia general hospital that has served over 10,000 minors. He remains optimistic about further enhancements with new A&Es in the private sector.
Lastly, the minister pointed out that in 2023, Gesy, the national healthcare system, incorporated 46 novel treatments for 17 conditions, expanding options for both inpatient and outpatient care. These advancements reflect Cyprus’s commitment to evolving its healthcare landscape and ensuring better quality of life for its citizens.
